Understanding Dental Implants
A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a post that anchors into the jaw and a crown that looks and works like a natural tooth. For many people it is the closest thing to having the tooth back. Here is how it works, start to finish (ADA, MouthHealthy).
The Three Parts of an Implant
- The implant: a titanium post placed in the jawbone
- The abutment: the connector that holds the crown
- The crown: the visible, tooth-shaped top
Why People Choose Implants
- They look and work like natural teeth
- They help keep the jawbone from shrinking where the tooth was lost
- They do not rely on grinding down the teeth next to them
- With good care, they can last many years
- They make eating and speaking easier
The Process, Step by Step
1. Consultation and Planning
We do a full exam, take 3D images, and map out a plan made for your mouth.
2. Placing the Implant
The titanium post goes into the jawbone, usually under local anesthesia.
3. Healing
Over three to six months, the implant fuses with the bone and becomes a solid base. This step is what makes implants last.
4. The Crown
Once healed, we attach the abutment and a custom crown, and your new tooth is done.
Are You a Candidate?
Most healthy adults are. The things we check include enough bone to hold the implant, healthy gums, and a commitment to daily care. Smoking can slow healing, so we will talk through that too. Implants are a strong option, but they are not the only one. Book a consultation and we will tell you honestly whether they fit your case.
